Legal Jobs
Lawyers
- Lawyers provide advice, write documents and conduct negotiations on legal matters, and may represent clients in court and tribunal proceedings. As well as this they may draft legal documents.
- Lawyers speak for their clients in court by presenting supportive evidence, and they counsel their clients on their legal rights and obligations.
- The distinction between solicitors and barristers varies from state to state. In NSW, Victoria and Queensland, lawyers practise as either a solicitor or a barrister. In SA, WA, Tasmania, the ACT and NT, the work of barristers and solicitors is usually combined
- Much of their work involves researching precedents, which are earlier interpretations of laws and the history of judicial decisions based on that law.
- Many lawyers specialize. Criminal lawyers, for example, are hired by people facing prosecution for crimes.
